Description

M 63 (NGC 5055) the Sunflower Glaxy, was discovered by Pierre Mechain in 1779 and is included in Messier's 1781 catalogue. It is located in the constellation Canes Venaatici, about 27 million light years from Earth; it is part of the M51 group of galaxies.

M 63 is a flocculant spiral galaxy; that is, one that doesn't have well defined spiral arms but, rather, appears to have many discontinuous arms [1], which gives it its nickname Sunflower..
